This chocolate cake is made with luxurious layers of rich chocolate and topped with rich chocolate icing.

Bizcocho de chocolate - Chocolate cake



  • 75 g butter
  • 75 g custard sugar
  • 2 eggs lightly beaten
  • 75 g self-raising flour
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • 25 g cocoa powder
  • 50 g ground almonds


  • 350 g dark chocolate
  • 100 g butter
  • 300 ml double cream
  • 75 g cake crumbs
  • 3 tbsp dark rum
  • 50 g dark chocolate melted
  • 75 g chopped almonds


1. Lightly grease a round tin and line the base. Beat together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

2. Gradually add the eggs, beating well after each addition. Sieve the flour, baking powder and cocoa powder together and fold into the mixture along with the ground almonds.

3. Pour into the prepared tin and bake in a preheated oven 180°C for 20 minutes or until springy to the touch.

4. Leave to cool slightly in the tin, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

5. To make the topping, heat the chocolate, butter and cream in a heavy-based pan over a low heat and stir until smooth. Cool, then chill for 30 minutes.

6. Beat well with a wooden spoon and chill for a further 30 minutes. Beat the mixture again, then add the cake crumbs and rum, beating until well combined.

7. Spoon over the sponge base and chill for 3 hours. Transfer the cake to a serving plate and decorate with the chopped almonds.
